There are many classes available that can help you hone your writing skills and develop your “voice!” Take advantage of any courses you can find, and be sure to network with your colleagues there.

You’ll also need a selection of clips (writing samples) to send out when you’re applying— most places request two or three samples. When you’re first starting out, you might find yourself taking some unpaid assignments. Working for free is the pits, but sometimes you need to get some published clips before other, more exclusive magazines will take you seriously. If you do find yourself working for free, ask yourself two questions: is this helping my career and am I gaining anything from this?

Invest in a tape recorder (or make sure you have a recorder app on your phone) and learn to take notes quickly and efficiently. Learning shorthand isn’t really necessary, but make sure you can decipher your own notes.
